Our first #curatedplaylist is by #helenlewis & @crizztoll! From Wikipedia “Helen (Matthews) Lewis (born October 2, 1924) is a sociologist, historian, and activist who specializes in Appalachia and women's rights. She is noted for developing an interpretation of Appalachia as an internal United States colony. She also specializes in Appalachian oral history, collecting and preserving the experiences of Appalachian working class women in their own words” This is from a post I made at the beginning of June on QA’s instagram “I had the privilege of meeting #helenlewis today & hearing her read from her latest book #thenatureofthings poems of flora & protest. When i’m in my 90s I hope I’m still making things! Her life’s work brought a new feminism to our home place, she gets credited with being the mother of #appalachianstudies & driving nails into the coffin of the #biblebeltwife stereotype. She said now that she can’t sit in the road to protest coal anymore she writes poems about it. Her latest work includes a breadth of topics from #ruraldragqueens to an #okraloveletter. It was special to be able to give her a copy of #electricdirt today. Y’all made that possible, thank you ☺ ❤ #queerappalachia #appstudies #electricdirt”
We were very fortunate that Helen & her dear friend Crystal put our very first playlist together! Helen’s life’s work paved the way for projects just like ours. You will be able to access the playlist with a free Spotify account. Our monthly curated playlists will be available to our Patreon sustainers, we wanted to share the first one because of the breadth & impact of Helen’s work in our beloved home place.
